VIDEO Recap | Circoloco In The Arena, Birmingham

From pure party lovers to industry insiders and DJs, there was a certain sense of excitement in the air for the bank holiday treat. Across one weekend a long list of house and techno talents including Visionquest, Jamie Jones, Kerri Chandler, Cassy, Matthias Tanzmann, The Martinez Brothers and many more were hitting the brummy city to party at new venue, The Arena, as well as the beloved Rainbow complex.

On April 6th the event that everyone had been talking about for weeks finally began. Circoloco is arguably one of the most illustrious parties in the world that serves daytime revelry lovers of those in the know and, of course, the most cutting edge music. The Easter celebration saw three typically off the wall events programmed in club spaces old and new across the city, with line-ups jam packed with on-point talents from across the house and techno spectrum.

A huge part of the event surrounded the launch of the brand new and impressive Arena. As well as mind melting lights and pyrotechnics, the space was decked out with heavy sound systems to ensure we could enjoy every high-hat, bass rumble and melodic pulse dished out to us. The space itself is a collection of Victorian railway arches under the over-reaching curve of The Rainbow’s embrace and somehow mimics the architecture of an ancient Coliseum. It held up to 5,000 ravers, and was no doubt one of the city’s most essential rave spaces that weekend. DJs included ‘Loco favorites Jamie Jones, Kerri Chandler, Matthias Tanzmann, Dyed Soundorom, Dan Ghenacia, Cassy, The Martinez Brothers and Below main man Adam Shelton.

Next, it was on to a warehouse at just past midnight where the sensational Hot Natured (aka Jamie Jones and Lee Foss) took us through to 7am with a back to back set. Label mates Luca C and Ali Love as well as Clockwork and Richy Ahmed also played, pouring out plenty of creamy house sounds right through the night. To finish off the Spring-time extravaganza, Below took the reins in The Courtyard, which comes complete with natural light, exposed brick work and trees for an open air day time special.  This time the party ran from midday until 3am and was headlined by one of the biggest teams in the game, Visionquest (Shaun Reeves, Lee Curtiss and Ryan Crosson). Of course, local night Below also had their residents out to play and founder Adam Shelton got behind the decks, along with One Records co-chief, Subb-an.

DC10’s Circo Loco is amongst the most sought after party brands with multiple residencies around the world at the foremost temples of dance music, leading festivals and conferences on all continents. We were lucky enough to have them travel from the hedonistic island to warm us up on our rain sodden shores, for a weekend that’s surely going in the books as one of the most exciting clubbing prospects to have hit Birmingham in years. With an open air background, up for it crowd and even a sit-down all soundtracked to cutting edge underground beats, we captured the quintessential moments of this famous brands gift to UK, but before the “Big One” hits your screens, here’s a little preview of what went down…

His career has spanned over 15 years bringing him from Coast to Coast where he has delivered beats with some of the top DJs in the world regularly sharing the decks with M.A.N.D.Y, Damian Lazarus, Jamie Jones, and Audiofly. He is considered to be a key player in the recent explosion of Toronto artists on the world and one of the men who make the magic happen for Canadian imprint, No.19 Music with label partner Jonny White of Art Department. So, after a life in music and now A&R for a label that is rapidly becoming a global underground gem, it’s undeniable this man knows a thing or two about music – which tracks will he never let go of and why? Over to Nitin…

Ron Trent – Morning Factory

Prescription is definitely up there as one of my top house labels of all time. This song being my favourite. Its simple, hypnotic, druggy and in my opinion this track is perfect for most occasions, that’s why its always in the rotation. Truth be told I used to play this track from half way through as I’m more a fan of this track less the spoken word vocals in the front half of it. I’ve recently acquired the dubplate version which is a full instrumental

Kerri Chandler – Atmospheric Beats

Kerri has hands down made some of the greatest house songs of all time. This song is always a hit for me. If I’m playing this tune it means I’m having a good time. It’s uplifting yet driving, house music at its finest.

M5 Basic Channel – I love Maurizio

Basic Chanel and everything else that has spawned from them, really. This cut in particular has that distinctive sub bass that you recognise as soon as you put it on. You always hope there’s someone in the crowd who runs up and is very happy to be hearing this. That always puts a smile on my face ☺ Its also a track I like to layer things on top of like an acappella or some crazy vocal track. Its one of the best DJ tools ever.

Robert Owens – Bring down the Walls

Gotta be one of my favourite songs by the powerhouse duo of Larry Heard and Robert Owens. This song was my introduction to Robert Owens amazing vocals and Larry Heard’s production. Of course when I did first hear this I didn’t fully grasp how important these two guys are. It was something I would discover after a few years. This is house music in its rawest form in my humbled opinion. I discovered it well after it came out and always thought it would have been amazing to be clubbing when this first came out. Of course I was only 8 years old when that happened so chances were slim.

Metro Area – Muira

This track is the perfect balance of retro and future sounds. I felt nostalgic the first time I heard this record. Definitely one that stays with me at all times. Morgan Geist and Envron have always been a step ahead of the times. I’ve been a fan for quite some time. I had to buy and additional copy of this on wax as I played the shit out of the first copy.
