Seth chats Mint Festival…

Seth Troxler has become a stalwart figure in Leeds over the years – playing Mint Club, Mint Warehouse and Cocoon in the Park – he nows joins the gang again for the amazing Mint Festivla in two weeks.

How are you? How is life? Life is pretty great right now and I’m feeling on top of the world. The sun is finally shining, at long last and it looks like it’s going to stay this way right through the Olympics. I just got back from THE MOST AMAZING weekend at Secret Garden Party, which is hands down the best festival in the world right now outside of Burning Man (apart from Mint Festival of course !) . It’s unbelievable just how much effort the SGP team put into their festival, from tiny little incidental details all over the place to much larger stuff like daytime fireworks made of multi-colored paint dust and acrobatic airplanes with pyrotechnics strapped to their wings. We are so pleased and honored to have them on board to help produce our Visionquest party at DC10 on Wednesday 1st August!

Can you see yourself doing this for decades, or does your mind ever turn to doing something else? Yeah the whole DJing thing can’t last forever; I don’t want to be doing this every weekend when I’m in my forties. The one thing that I love as much as playing records is grilling meat so the end game is for me to make enough money to open a restaurant (or several if I can) and sit back and watch people enjoying food.

Why so few productions from you in recent years? Would you like to produce more; is it just a time thing? I’ve actually been producing a fair amount recently so expect quite a few tracks from me in coming months. I’ve just remixed ‘Champagne Coast’ by Blood Orange with Subb-an which we’re putting out on limited vinyl soon. We’ve also just done a remix of Dave Aju for Circus company which is pretty big and I’m currently working on a remix of Matt Dear for Spectral and an original track with Deetron.

How is life in Berlin now you have been there a while – again, would you consider moving away? You seem to be a big fan of London… Which is why I have lived in London for the last year and a bit… time to do some research!

What should people expect from you at Mint festival? Bam, Kapow, Splat!!!

You have played Mint many times – and Cocoon in the Park – what makes the brand so good do you think? I’m close friends with Shane, who owns Mint and puts on the Cocoon parties in Leeds

What else have you got coming up/are you looking forward to? Plenty in Ibiza still, then another tour back end of the year – and of course Mint Festival…

Festicket tell us their summer highlights

Festival season is nearly over – but with Festicket they are already looking forward to next year.  Here Zack, the co-founder talks us through his highlights of the summer…

For information on 2013 check here – www.festicket.com

If I tried to write about every great festival from Summer 2012, it’d be 2013 already and I wouldn’t have finished! So here are a few of the best, to get those memories flowing….

The 10th edition of Primavera Sound in Barcelona confirmed its success as an underground, industrial alternative to more mainstream style festivals. Primaveral invades Barcelona for most of May, with the showpiece event at the Forum attracting 40,000 to its awesome avant-garde, industrial setting. Headliners The Cure were excellent – the test of time has left its mark on Smith’s voice, but they still have a formidable stage presence – and acts such as Scuba, M83, Beach House and Godflesh helped create Primavera’s unique atmosphere.

I know, I know – Kazantip Republic is not a festival, but there are not enough music republics around to do a top 5! 20 years on from its small-scale beginning – Kazantip started out as a windsurfing competition – this party nation has established itself on the world stage as a safe haven for tens of thousands of music-loving refugees from Europe and further afield. I cannot wait to see what it will become in the next 20 years!

Croatia continued to build on its growing reputation for jam-packed summers of music. One of a mass of summer festivals being held across the country, INmusic stands out as Croatia’s largest open-air event. The beautiful setting of an island on Lake Jarun has hosted 25,000 people each year since 2005, which, along with a 2012 line-up including The Cranberries and Franz Ferdinand, makes INmusic almost unbeatable for alternative, rock and pop lovers.

Hop Farm sells itself as a unique UK festival with ‘no sponsorship’ and ‘no branding.’ While I’m not sure about the second of these claims (‘Hop Farm’ is, in itself, a brand), I really agree that the festival as a whole feels unlike pretty much anything else around. It can attract big names like Bob Dylan (for his only UK show in 2012) but also gives great space for new acts. British performers in particular are well represented, and the Buskers’ Boulevard adds to the personal and intimate feel of the whole event.

Monegros Desert Festival – not much needs to be said about the biggest rave in Spain. Every year it promises so much, and every year it delivers. The Prodigy produced a stellar performance, and Richie Hawtin’s closing set is being hailed as his best of the Summer season – which maybe helps to make up for Bloc Festival being shut down shortly after his set! ;-) (Just kidding!)

FACE close out the summer with Kerri Chandler…

The Rainbow have just announced their huge Autumn and Winter line ups – including the likes of Annie Mac, SBTKRT & Scuba to name a few. But before we get to that star-studded cast Birmingham stalwart soiree FACE closed out the summer with an exclusive 5 hour set from the legendary big hitter and pioneer Kerri Chandler.
Kerri is famous for his attention to detail began with a 3 hour sound check before the club even opened, adding to that was a comment made by the man himself to say that the layout of The Rainbow was very similar to his set up at home, that leaves something for the imagination right? Further more the technician at the club Joe openly discussed Kerri as one of the friendliest guys he has ever worked with, the residents concurred the before mentioned statement. A nice start to the evening.
Always one to add another dimension to his set (after a great warm up) he took us on a 5 hour journey through some the classic edits we have become accustom to over the years marrying perfectly with some of his more recent music. Always one to bring his beloved keyboard along for the ride this just was just the icing on the proverbial cake so to speak. The fans in attendance were in absolute uproar of what they were experiencing, the atmosphere was just electric.
Always one to take time out to reach over the booth to shake hands with the fans, whilst he was being so kind one of the many memorable moments occurred when one of the faithful proceeded to sit in the middle of the dance-floor whilst another member had a horn at the front, as soon as the track dropped we all knew what was going to happen and in due course the roof nearly came off.
The party could have easily gone on till the early hours but was forced to a halt by the door staff with a couple of tracks to go. To credit Mr Chandler even further he stuck around for another 30 minutes or so to have his picture taken with the fans.
All in all this was a pleasure from start to finish – everyone from the front to the back of the courtyard were in sheer joy of their evening, I know I can’t wait for the Autumn and winter showcases now – I’m sure everyone will agree.

LS City records return with a double pronged attack…

The return of LS City

LS City is back! The label of love set up by DJ and producer Jamie Fisher as a way of having complete control over the music he releases, rather than being at the mercy of various other label bosses, has showcased plenty of city talent as well as names from further afield. Richard Dinsdale, Style of Eye, the boss himself plus many more have all appeared so far, with Beatport Top 10s and various chart topping positions all secured as a result.

Says Jamie of LSCity’s outlook: “The label is just the outlet and should only have small say in the actual track and final sounds of the master – I don’t want to interfere too much, I want people to be able to express themselves and know their music will be put out as they want it to be.”

The next two releases are now ready for the big wide world, and are detailed below.

Jamie Fisher – Vamped Up

LS City Records

Leeds’ LS City Records offer up a new track from label boss Jamie Fisher complete with remixes from Benny Royal and Lissat & Voltaxx.

The original track is a rolling tech house groove peppered with tribal percussion, old school recalling rave pianos and a heavily filtered female vocal. It’s a rambunctious house track designed for maximum impact on house loving dancefloors.

For their part, Lissat & Voltaxx speed things up, make more of the gauzy, ravey piano stabs and have the beats rotate that bit slicker.  It’s a dynamic track with hi-hats ringlets at its core that allow you to hook on to them and never let up ‘til the end when a dusty breakbeat drops in to really tare things up.

Finally, Dutch superstar Benny Royal adds he usual percussive density to the track, with plenty of big synth washes and squelchy bassline all rubbing against each other to make for a hi energy house track of the highest order.

Benny Royal – If You Look Ace 2012 EDITS

LS City Records

LS City Records first released Benny Royal’s – If You Look Ace in 2010, but now re-release it with some killer remixes from some of the day’s top talents.

First up is Hungarian house producer Belocca. His tasty edit adds plenty of atmosphere in the form of white noise waves and bright metallic FX. The beats lap at a cool mid-tempo and the percussion is smooth and slick, making this a perfect house bomb.

Next up is label boss Jamie Fisher. His edit is a melange of styles that includes jazzy little melodies, big bold bass and plenty of squelchy synths. Polished production and subtle breakdowns add plenty of tension and when the release comes you can almost see the hands reaching skywards.

Finally, Ivan Miranda & DJ Latin Drum turn in an electro-frazzled remix with humid percussion and lots of brightly coloured synth lines.  Some harmonic bell sounds add depth to the breakdown and the ensuing drop is sure to lock in all those house loving heads.

Another great release then, from the ever on-point LS City Records.

Warehouse re-opens with a master class from Kerri Chandler…

Cometh the hour, cometh a new venue in London. However this time I have a feeling that this one will not just a be a flash in the pan outfit like a lot of others we have witnessed over the past few years. Upon getting an invite down to the re-opening I was just thinking that the city that rarely sleeps could do with another addition to its plethora of venues.
Its safe to say that this was an invite I’m certainly happy I accepted. Raw brickwork plastered the inside with a lengthy bar hedonistic lighting and strobes which bounced from wall to wall. The soundsytem looked beefy with a raised booth that over looked the main dancefloor. Money well spent so far. The underground theme was is full effect here as the deep rich tones of the residents Jaxx and Danny Bayley welcomed the punters, taking their place on the floor ready for what was to be one of the sets of the year so far.
Kerri Chandler doesn’t need an introduction, however we should give him one. The US legend has made a strong comeback over the past few years with his residency at DC10 being a new home for him. London has also played a part in his resistance as he has come to the forefront of the house scene once again. Also on hand to play an extended set his track selection left no stone unturned, dropping edits of old and new.
Tracks from the likes of Julio Bashmore ‘Au Veve’ and MK’s ‘Burning’ we sure fire hits and certainly got the Warehouse fan faithful on their toes with their hands in the air. The crowd may I say were unbelievable all night, adding to the spice on the spice of the music and venue this was night not to forget. All in all, this was a special re-opening for the club who also have some huge events lined up. The likes of Dan Ghenacia, Lee Foss and Alexis Raphael all arrive at the venue over September and October and on the back of this event I bet they can’t wait to get involved.

Lee Foss arrives at the new Warehouse, London…

COMPETITION TIME - for two tickets to see Lee Foss at Warehouse, London on September 22nd...
Question at bottom.
SEPTEMBER  22nd
LEE FOSS, PROJECT FM
Lee Foss and Jamie Jones’ label, Hot Creations, has been at the forefront of a new musical movement. No one had put slow, sexy, disco infused, 80s slanted house with creamy r&b vocals and expected it to work before – but it does. The label’s has released some of the biggest tracks of recent years, often from Foss who plays tonight as he does at WMC, in Ibiza, Sonar, everywhere on a regular basis. There are few more in demand DJs out there than this one.  Project FM also plays.
Lee Foss comes from which country?
