Krush draft in DJ Tennis and Thugfucker!

Event Biog

On September 29 sees the most in-demand label of the year hitting our floor with no better reps than the founders in the flesh:

Dj Tennis – Italian born, Berlin frequent, long term dj, promoter, music connoisseur and, most recently, producer is well his ability to deliver the most talked about parties. From the life and Death showcase in Barcelona, during Sonar 2012, through the Club Der Visionaere do and the Ibiza marathons, Tennis seems to be (in the words of James Cameron) the king of the world

Get a glimpse of the man in the act here:

Though Thugfucker have been producing house and disco for years, their breakthrough hit came only in 2011. “Disco Gnome” polished up a familiar R&B vocal hook and turned it into one of the zeitgeist defining tunes of the year. It straddled genres lines, built at a slow and sultry tempo and featured plenty of shimmering synths. So too did it come with equally on-point remix from Tale of Us with whom Italian-New York duo Holmar Filipsson and Greg Oreck have since gone on to work (as Life And Death) on Visionquest’s eponymous imprint. The duo plays around the world from fabric to BPM festival to WMC so we are glad to have them.

System and Louche round off their Bank Holiday parties with a bang this August, bringing Ricardo Villalobos, Zip and Panorama Bar hotshot Tama Sumo to the party.

Not much needs to be said of Ricardo; an absolute pioneer of the minimal house and techno game, and by far and away one of the most influential artists in contemporary electronic music. Born in Santiago Chile in 1970 and moving to Berlin when he was a youngster, even today Ricardo’s sound reflects his two homes- taking equal inspiration from classic Berlin techno and loopy South American drum rhythms. UK appearances from Ricardo are as rare as hens teeth, you really are in for a treat here, especially seeing as he’ll be playing on his own, and also back to back with our next guest…

Like Ricardo, Zip also plays only a handful of shows on our shores a year. Real name Thomas Franzmann, Zip co-owns and curates the wonderful Perlon Records, one of the most distinguished techno labels out there. Releasing since 97, Perlon’s intellectual twist on electronic music has seen artists such as Akufen, Cassy and even Ricardo release on the ground breaking label. Their refusal to bend to the digital format in favour of vinyl has seen them gain respect from all corners of the globe. Thomas selectively gigs at only the worlds finest venues, holding exclusive residencies at Panorama Bar and Harry Klein. Widely regarded as one of the best DJ’s in the game by his piers, we can’t wait to welcome Zip back to leeds

We’re delighted to introduce another of our favourite DJs; the excellent Tama Sumo. A true DJs DJ, Tama Sumo, real name Kerstin Egert, is one of the notorious Panorama Bar residents, and an absolute connoisseur of house and techno. Kerstin will be warming the terrace up, and if her last visit to Leeds is anything to go by we’re in for a real treat.

The Mint Warehouse’s summer parties have been a refreshing change to Bank Holidays in Leeds this year. With a lineup as outrageous as this (with still more acts to be announced) System and Louche will have firmly established themselves as one of THE places to be in England on Bank Holiday Sundays.

Adam Shelton, Larse, Inxec
Finnebassen, Rey & Kjavik, Jesse James, Johnny Bloomfield, Mark Derry,

Connected has had an amazing run of parties in the seven years they have been running. From Waifs & Strays to Huxley via Tom Budden, Miss Devine and Spencer Parker, the night has showcased established underground names next to up and comers at a range of venues around London. Now settle at the impressive cable, they celebrate their 7th with Below and One Records man Adam Shelton, Larse, Inxec and more.

Adam Shelton’s passion for quality underground house music exuberantly shines through in his DJ sets and productions that have been dominating dance floors worldwide recently. Having spent the whole of his adult life devoted to the music and parties he holds dear, Adam now finds himselfrecognised as one of the most respected artists on the underground scene, co-owner of the prevailing One Records and at the heart of his notorious Birmingham Sunday rave, Below.

Moving from strength to strength as a producer, Adam has now released on labels such as 2020 Vision, Dame Music, Under The Shade, air london and Matt Tolfrey’s Foot and Mouth. Producing not only as a solo artist, but also under bubbling side project S.A.S with partner Subb-an, which has become a household favourite in the clubbing world, with smash hits including ‘In the Candy Store’ and ‘House Nation’.

Germany’s Larse meanwhile is a current hot property, with his releases on Noir and We Love This carving out his own sonic niche – one you’ll want to get lost in on the dancefloor, for sure…

Cutting a two metre shadow, with blue eyes and red hair – its not hard to miss the sky scraping figure of Inxec. As an ever rising talent with an ability not yet fully blossomed, Inxec produces music from his beloved house right through to heart breaking, thought inspiring mood sections for national radio plays here in Germany. Leftroom, Barraca, Coocon and more are the sort of quality labels you can find him on.

Also playing in the sonically spot on and 1500 capacity Cable will be Finnebassen, Rey & Kjavik, Jesse James, Johnny Bloomfield, Mark Derry,

MUSIC | Fur Coat free track giveaway

Many of you may believe that Fur Coat is a new act on the scene, in actual fact this is far from true. Even before the Venezuelan pair met at a house party in their native Caracas in 2004, Israel Sunshine was carving a unique niche as a DJ, and Sergio Muñoz was following his own path and bringing his own unique sound to the table (under the Delete alias) for numerous labels

Now they are “looked after” by Damian Lazarus, who has essentially plucked the duo from Latin American obscurity and given them a platform on his world renown Crosstown Rebels label. It was the duo’s blending of live vocals, serious grooves and a heavily funk indebted sound which had Lazarus snap them up.

“Our music is mostly for the dancefloor” say the pair of their output so far. “We consider ourselves to be making some sort of Space Funk. Our main influences are house and techno, but we add our own twist so though stuff works on the dancefloor, it’s also deep, funky, trippy and hopefully delivers some sort of story to the listener.”

They have kindly decided to give you a track for free, please click the link below and see what you think. We liked it.

Kerri 'Kaoz' Chandler - one of deep house music's originators and Mad House Records boss - has been injecting soul into house music since the early nineties. An ambassador of the natural and instinctive 4/4 beat, Kerri's influences can be traced back to New Jersey growing up in a family of jazz musicians. Few control a club like this man.

As for the newly refurbished club itself, there focus has been put on light and sound, with a brand new system put in place by experienced engineers to ensure every beat is as crisp and clean as possible. Made by Funktion One, the company have decided to use The Warehouse as the first place to install their brand new and latest system, so make sure you come down and check it out.

What’s more an intimate third room has been added with another bar and state of the art system to ensure even more musical bases can be covered in the same night. Open from 11pm to 7am every weekend, the new space is sure to become one of the most loved in the city with its raw but chic décor, mind blowing light and sound and keen selection of headline acts covering all bases from deepest house to electro, techno and more.

60 seconds with John Drysdall from Beacons…
Why should people come to Beacons in 2012?
THE LINE UP IS WITHOUT DOUBT ONE OF THE BEST OF THE YEAR. IT IS VALUE FOR MONEY @ £84.50. THE ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS VERY HIGH, THE ART WILL BE STUNNING & THE SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE IS BEAUTIFUL.
Are there unique elements to the festival that we should know about?
THIS YEAR ALL OUR DECOR HAS BEEN HAND MADE OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST 12 MONTHS, WE FEEL ITS REALLY GOING TO EXCITE PEOPLE. WE HAVE THE THEREMIN BOLLARD BALLROOM WHICH IS BEING PREMIERED AT THE FESTIVAL THIS YEAR…WE HAVE A NORTHERN FESTIVAL EXCLUSIVE FROM WILD BEASTS.
If you had to pick an act you were most looking forward to seeing then who would it be?
IM A GREAT ADMIRER OF ANDREW WEATHERALL THE WAY HE KEEPS AHEAD OF THE PACK..ALFOS WILL BE A BIG HIT ON SATURDAY NIGHT
As a festival organiser, what are your thoughts on the current climate with Bloc recently going into administration?
IT WAS SAD WHAT HAPPENED TO BLOC, IT SEEMS THINGS CONSPIRED AGAINST THEM AND OF COURSE WE CAN ALL BE THE BEST EVENT ORGANISERS IN HINDSIGHT, THE FACTS ARE THAT THIS IS THE YEAR WHEN MISTAKES ARE BEING PUNISHED, THERE IS NO ROOM FOR SHODDY FESTIVALS ANYMORE, THE BUBBLE HAS BURST AND THE CLIENTELE ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY SELECTIVE ABOUT WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO SPEND THEIR WELL EARNED MONEY. I DONT THINK ITS A PROBLEM IF YOU HAVE YOUR GAME ON, ITS A NATURAL CLEARING TIME, WELL OVERDUE IN MY BOOK, TOO MANY FESTIVALS FOR FESTIVALS SAKE.  YOU WILL SEE MORE NICHE FESTIVALS SURVIVING, WITH THE EMPHASIS GOING BACK TO BEING A MUSIC LOVING AUDIENCE RATHER THAN DEDICATED FOLLOWERS OF FASHION..

FACE turn 3!

Although we can’t quite believe it Face is three already. Over the past years, the night has established itself as the finest in the north of England, bringing label showcases, city debuts and so much more to Birmingham. So, as soon as greatevents with Shonky & Sueil as part of the Culprit party on August 11th and Kerri Chandler and Franck Roger are done in the weeks before 13th October, the birthday will play out with Matthias Tanzmann B2b Davide Squillace, JoyOrbison and Scuba.

Matthias Tanzmann started his DJ and production career in the mid nineties in Leipzig, playing regularly at the renowned club ‘Distillery’. These early days saw his first release as ‘Gamat 3000′ on Dessous Recordings, which was quickly followed by releases on Freude Am Tanzen, Lo-Fi Stereo and FM Musik.  In 2000 he founded Moon Harbour Recordings, and since then scores of Moon Harbour releases have been play listed by renowned DJs all over the world. The label rapidly became synonymous with quality deep-house and tech-house, and has released many ofMatthias Tanzmann’s own records as well as those from the likes of Luna City Express, Marlow, Martinez and Dan Drastic.

When you hear the name Davide Squillace you think ‘DJ’ and ‘DC:10’.  That’s doing something of a disservice to the Barcelona based Italian, though, because he’s not only a fine spinner at the Ibiza club… but he also runs his own labels (Hideout most avidly in 2011) but so too does he have a long back catalogue of productions starting in 1998 which includes imprints like Supernature, Sci + Tec and Loco Dice’s Desolat.

Scuba meanwhile, is the head of one of the hottest bass labels in the world, Hot Flush, releasing his own great LPs and EPs as well as those from Locked Groove, Guy Andrews, Paul Woolford and more.  Based in Berlin, he regularly plays Berghain and in fact has his own Sub: stance night at the club.

Finally, little needs to be said of Joy Orbison. As well as kick starting the garage revival with ‘Hyph Mngo’ a few years ago, he now runs his own label Hinge Finger, and collaborates with Boddike for some of the biggest house/bass/techno tracks around, including ‘Elipses’ and Faint’. His DJ sets take in house, garage, bass and more and are something to behold.

Nu Groover | Antonio Colantuoni

Hi, my name is Antonio Colantuoni

My friends call me Antonio or Tboy

I am from Rome

I live in London

A track you would recognise me for is To be. It all came from an older project of mine. The bass and part of the drums were put together before I started working it with Wildkats and then all the vocals edits and a more funk intention came out pretty naturally. We all felt the track and its potential! I was very happy when Lee Foss charted it on his RA Chart and Richy Ahmed played it in his Fabric Podcast for Hot Creations.

TO BE (ORIGINAL) ON BEATPORT

Labels I have released on are… Neim, Akbal Music, Suruba

I am going to tell you a bit about myself because…I really like U!

I was knew I wanted to work in music when…..as soon as I finished High School I chose to go and work for a recording studio because I was fascinated by the concept of recording and mixing and wanted to learn more about it.

I got into dance music…when I was in my teens and started going clubbing.

I got into making dance music when… I got hooked up with the first DAWs and Drum machines about a decade ago!

I prefer to…mmm…I love producing as there is no better satisfaction than creating the music and vibes you like, but when you can share those vibes with a crowd it’s definitely amazing! So I love both really.

My favourite studio snack is…Kinder Bueno – I just love it! And Haribooooos!

My best moment out DJing so far is …Well definitely playing for WYS in room 1 at Fabric – the sound there is just amazing and for me it cannot get better than that

The funniest recently was playing in Oslo in May on the Norwegian National Day when everyone was dressed up in the national costume – and very drunk!!!  It felt surreal and the venue (Skaugum) it’s a little gem.

A remix you would recognise me for is… The remix I recently did of the hit Mantis from Los Suruba (on Suruba).

Artists who have remixed my work include…. Louie Fresco, Miguel Puente, The Midnight Perverts, Sean Roman

Artists who I have remixed include…Alexis Raphael, Los Suruba and now Sasch BBC and Caspar, Death House Squad (Hugo & Sammy) and Ziggy Kinder.

My music has been featured on…  The Space Ibiza 2012 (Official Deluxe Edition) mixed by MYNC and Edu Imbernon and Amnesia Ibiza Electronica (Mixed by Mar-T)

I have collaborated with…Wildkats.

I have played… For WYS! (@ Fabric London), Café 1001, Magna Carta, Egg, a few warehouses, in Lisbon and at the infamous Industria in Porto, in Oslo in Sardinia at The June Festival 2011.

My sound is… a fusion of deep and disco vibes with influences from house and garage.

My next release is…? the remix for Death House Squad (1st of August 2012); the remix for Sasch BBC and Caspar (due end of Summer 2012); an EP on Miguel Campbell’s Outcross (The People Love U – Autumn 2012), one track on Hot Waves with Wildkats (Autumn 2012); and I’m currently working on an EP for Suruba.

http://soundcloud.com/tboy/gvr010_death-house

I am next playing at… WYS! @ Fabric on the 29th of July.

In 10 years time I see myself…fishing somewhere in Guatemala…

Showing my work big love at the moment is… Miguel Campbell that took me in the Outcross family; and definitely Suruba and Neim.

My favourite producer at the moment is… From the UK – Miguel Campbell and Waifs & Strays; internationally – the Mexicans Balcazar & Sordo and Climbers.

My favourite DJ at the moment is… mmm…there are a few, but to mention one I’m quite hooked with Julio Bashmore

Quirky musical talents of mine include… vocal samples recorded at home and that you can also find in To Be and the upcoming Eye Of The Tiger (Outcross).

The strangest thing about me is…some of my friends say I’m a bit of a hurricane when I’m in party mood while when in the studio I’m very focused and demanding (almost serious!)

The worst day I ever had musically was… When I heard Justin Bieber on the radio.

The best day I ever had musically was…when Lee Foss charted To Be J

My first club memory is…gone!

We should keep an eye on you because… I’m short and easy to lose…

My famous last words are… “from Monday I’ll start going to the Gym” and / or “Next week I’ll get a tan”

Where can we find out more about you?
