On Thursday 20th October 2011, the Amsterdam Dance Event hosted DJ Mag’s first ever international Top 100 DJ party which celebrated the results of the poll designed to reconize the best talent in mixing and producing electronic dance music worldwide. The poll gained a record breaking 600,000 votes and saw David Guetta knock 4-time consecutive winner, Armin van Buuren off the top spot.
David Guetta, known for his more commercial take on house music, was closely followed by Tiesto, Deadmau5 and Above & Beyond. The well known trio, Swedish House Mafia also made it into the top ten. Guetta collected his prize from Armin Van Buuren himself who had to pacify an overtly displeased and stung crowd about the results of the poll. Somewhat disappointingly the cheers for this years Top 100 DJ Awards still stand as an IOU; the fireworks went off, the confetti spun in the air and landed daintily on…The floor – along with all of the praise usually seen at the top 100 parties.
Whatever your opinion may be on the poll, we for one at UGroove agree it was inevitable that Guetta would at least be in the top two, it’s a global poll and in that sense, it makes sense. On the up side for the more underground fans, it is good to see some less commercial acts like Richie Hawtin, John Digweed and James Zabiela, who we recently caught up with on UGroove, make the Top 100.
